The Food and Hospitality Industry is one of our biggest employers and a wonderful career opportunity for many young people. The 2023 Culinary Skills Challenge, held Wednesday, April 19th, on the SMSU, Marshall, campus gave students from SW Minnesota an opportunity to learn more about food and the food industry. Approximately 250 students took part in this amazing educational event, including 39 students from Montevideo High School. Students could compete in a variety of food competitions, such as the main Culinary Cooking competition, Cake Decorating, Knife Skills, Food Art, Menu Design, Baking Science or Table Setting. Students also had the opportunity to attend a variety of food workshops, led by top chefs and business leaders from the area and from around the world. Workshops included Smoked Pizza, Cooking with Maple Syrup, Hmong Stir Fry, French Beignets, Spring Rolls, Decorating Cookies, Preserving the Harvest, The Science of a Brat, Slushie Science, Whole Hog Butchery, Omelets, tru Shrimp and Growing Sprouts.
Mrs. Lund, MHS Family and Consumer Science teacher, was so proud of our students and reported that they had an amazing day! Congratulations to all our incredible competitors:

MHS students in Mr. Olson's BUILDING TRADES and FURNITURE PRODUCTION classes toured Max Bats in Brooten and Bayer Built in Belgrade. They heard about the geometry and physics involved as well as the difference in wood used in producing bats. Many career opportunities were explored today!

The event is held at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall, MN. Competitors in the Culinary/Cooking Competition vie for SMSU Scholarships of $500, $1000, and $2000!
